Bentota is a coastal resort town in southern Sri Lanka, located in the Southern Province along the Indian Ocean. It is one of the country's best-known beach destinations, celebrated for its combination of golden beaches, calm river scenery, water sports, and tropical gardens.

Bentota lies at the mouth of the Bentota River, about 65 km south of Colombo and 56 km north of Galle. Its distinctive geography combines long sandy beaches with mangrove-lined waterways, creating opportunities for both seaside relaxation and river excursions. Tourism is the town's primary economic activity, supported by resorts, restaurants, and recreation providers.

Beyond the beach, Bentota is known for its links to celebrated Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa through the nearby Lunuganga Estate, as well as Brief Garden, created by his brother Bevis Bawa.
