Kitulgala

History and culture

Kitulgala gained international recognition when scenes for the 1957 Academy Award-winning film The Bridge on the River Kwai were filmed nearby. Although the temporary bridge built for filming no longer exists, remnants of its foundations remain, and the association continues to attract visitors interested in film history. 

Why it stands out

Beyond its adventure sports, Kitulgala is valued by birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts because its forests host many of Sri Lanka's endemic bird species. The town also takes its name from the kitul palm (Caryota urens), whose sap is traditionally used to make treacle, jaggery, and palm wine, reflecting the area's longstanding agricultural heritage.
